Standing on the brink then the telephone rings
It should have been me

I have the pills
I have the drink
I am going to do it
I am on the brink

You’re gone now forever
And all I can see
Is you died and I didn’t
It should have been me

Is that the phone?
Just one last call
I pick it up
I stand in the hall

Whoever it is
Doesn’t matter to me
You died and I didn’t
It should have been me

I hear your voice
So far away
Gentle but strong
“Don’t do it” you say

But you left me alone
Oh why can’t you see?
You died and I didn’t
It should have been me

But I throw out the pills
And pour out the drink
The pills down the loo
The booze down the sink

If you want me to live
Then that’s how it will be
But you died and I didn’t
And it should have been me
