The soon to be ending of a short relationship
Get up in the morning, pick up
The paper, same story, different
Day. Horoscope, Gemini, Something you just
got back will be taken away
again. Horoscopes, who believes them
anyway? Eat breakfast, three eggs over easy, don’t kill
the yolk. Video phone rings, so early.
Who is it? Turn it on and see her
The person I call mother. Our love a hibernating
Bear, spring came and hasn’t gone away.
Hello, I sign.
Hello she signs back. Something is
Wrong. I can see that the crow has dug deeper
Into her eyes. What’s wrong? I sign
She has been to the doctor, the prognoses,
Isn’t good. A mass on my ovary, she signs.
Stage two, or was it three. My mind as
Blank as the pages of an unused journal,
Waiting to be filled with detail.
Too old for surgery,
Poison will run through her body,
To destroy not only the bad but what
Also remains good. I just thought
You should know she signs.
Ok I sign. We say good bye, I turn off the
Phone. The bear came out for an indefinite spring,
Poachers killed her, killed our love.
What you just got back will soon
Be taken away
Again.
Horoscopes, who believes them anyway?
