A young hummingbird's plight.
A storm had blustered from the bay
and swept his mom and dad away.

The wind blew strong, the light was dim;
his feet were clinging to a limb.

Mosquito families buzzed along
and heard the hummer's sorrowed song.

They helped the one all weak and wild
then chose adoption for the child.

They journeyed to a picnic place,
a park with every kind of face.

Mosquitoes showed him things to eat;
the humans were their favorite treat.

As he began to hover there,
the frightened folks leapt in the air.

He nibbled flesh but didn't bite;
it tasted strange and wasn't right.

The days went by, but soon he found
his parents sweet and tender sound.

His mom caressed a warm embrace;
Dad wiped the tears from off his face.

He lived a life of flowered scenes
with nectar plants of reds and greens.

Though wings of strength and spirit strong,
his folks detected something wrong.

They wondered why he loved the park,
and why he'd sneak out after dark?
