inspired by Taylor Swift's Last Kiss
I watch my things
packed away in boxes
loaded into the borrowed trailer.
I watch the truck pull away,
knowing my car would follow shortly.

I drove to your house,
walked through the familiar halls,
into that room I loved and hated so much.
I saw you on your bed,
saw the time, 1:58.
Never did I imagine we’d end like this.

I remembered the parties you brought me to,
ones I never would on my own,
but you convinced me.
Remembered you meeting my father,
your arm around my shoulders,
watching the game.

I remembered our first kiss,
wet and freezing from the rain.
Our legs were giving out,
not just from that workout.

And so, as you told me you loved me,
I wondered why
I had to go away.
Why this had to be our last kiss,
why did we have to end like this?

When I got to my new home,
that new dorm,
I sat amongst the half unpacked boxes,
wearing your shirt,
your name, forever on my lips.
Why did it end so soon?
