You took my smile away.

The Smile

With you I smiled again.
I thought I never would.
You helped to ease my pain.
A task no other could.

Your kindness helped me through
when life had brought me low.
I asked myself ‘Why you?’
Perchance I’ll never know!

But this, I felt was true -
With life’s cards held in hand,
your warmth would help me do
what e'er the fates had planned.

I’d do it with a smile
and think of you, and swear
my heart you did beguile
with tenderness and care.

So tell me, what went wrong?
What did I do amiss
to break the bond deemed strong
and lose your tender kiss?

Maybe I’ll never know.
My heart, ever in thrall
won’t let my feelings show
or let the teardrops fall.

They drown me from within,
they choke me as I sleep.
Was loving you a sin?
Is that what makes me weep?

There is no more to say
I know that you despise
me more with every day.
I see it in your eyes.

Yet what you did was cruel.
Here in this lonely place
you played me for a fool,
stole my smile from my face.
