Trying to find meaning in an unknowable mystery.
Oh lonely midnight bird, how I long to know the meaning of your song.
Do you sing of loves once lost, once more found, or those who have done you wrong?
Do you sing of an unyielding hope, or are you wrought with hopeless despair?
Does your melody speak of justice in life found, or a life found unfair?

Intently I listen to every note for the slightest meaning I might glean.
I begin to wonder if the message is the song, or hidden in between.
Perhaps your song is wrapped in joy, and wears the promise of tomorrow.
Or perhaps your song is bathed in tears, and garbed in garments of sorrow.

Oh lonely midnight bird, for who is it that you do sing?
For whom do you intend your tune a smile or tear to bring?
Is it a ballad for a kindred spirit? Do you sing your song for me?
Or does your chorus speak to another in the darkness I can not see?

Suddenly a gentle breeze and rustling of leaves disturbs the night.
Dancing trees your cue; silent you fall, spread your wings, and take flight.

In the darkness once again I stand alone,
Pondering where it is that you might have flown.
Wondering where you’ll go, and where you’ve been.
Has our time past? Will we meet once again?

Oh lonely midnight bird, I pray you one day return and sing to me.
For your song, lonely midnight bird, has finally set my spirit free.
