How I describe the pain in my shoulder before a joint replacement operation
IT

Can you hear that loud, deafening noise?
Like a child who has lost all of his toys
It is so loud that it breaks the drum’s ear
You don’t understand, until it you can hear

What do you do when the sun is so bright?
You cover your eyes or cower in fright
There are no dark glasses that will hide it from you
Piercing the lens and continuing right through

Think of a smell that is putrid and gross
On a scale of one to ten, it is the most
Your olfactory nerve is burning and numb
Worse than a 500 year old rotting thumb

And a taste so bad you can’t spit it out
Remaining forever, there is no doubt
Some rancid, over spiced, undercooked meat
Your mouth is on fire because of the heat

Take all of these things, driven deep to your soul
Like the vacuum that exists in a dark black hole
A weight on your chest, removes all the air
You don’t understand, it doesn’t seem fair

Now you know the level and the severity of it
When it comes, there is no escape from the pit
A winter in hell, it couldn’t be colder
I hope that someday it leaves from my shoulder
