The anticipation before surgery for a shoulder joint replacement
Anticipation, like waiting for Christmas to come
Makes everyone crazy, acting silly and dumb
You look forward to the prize left under the tree
Slicing through the paper, what’s inside, you want to see

Could be what you want, or might be a surprise
You show appreciation and make the giver feel wise
The waiting has ended and now’s the time to play
Put on that new wool sweater and ride in your red sleigh

That pile of paper and ribbon, in the corner, looks so sad
Too soon into the trash, for the usefulness they had
Many toys won’t last a month, for some, already too late
And just like the crumpled wrapping, IT knows this is fate

Leaving quietly, without fanfare, never was IT’s style
While you are waiting patiently, IT scrapes like a raspy file
Slicing through your wrapper, the doctor sees what you have inside
He takes IT out, and leaves his present there with pride

He knew just what you wanted; one item on your list
No surprises here, just the thing for what you wished
You find the wait is hard, for the day when this is done
I guess that’s why they use a long word, like, anticipation
