Some rough water.
As Our Love Dies

As our love dies it takes with it the stars,
The moon, the sun, the ruddy planet Mars.
Brown eyes that cheered my bleakest, bluest days
Are gone.  Now only darkness meets the haze
Of tears that pierce my heart and burn my eyes,
And leave me lost and stranded as love dies.

A wise man said time softens sorrow’s sting,
And causes saddened hearts once more to sing.
“Time is the healer,” wise men love to say.
“Press on!  The sun will shine again one day!”
But I can’t seem to pry the soft brown eyes
Loose from my fondest mem’ries as love dies.

Friends promise that a brighter day will dawn
If only I’ll accept that she is gone.
And other eyes, ‘though possibly not brown,
Will cheer me like hers did when I was down.
Another smile, they say, will light and guide
Me through life’s maze once loving her has died.

But still I stumble on, week after week,
Refusing to believe the one I seek
Has taken flight to fields I do not know,
But where, I pray, sweet-scented roses grow…
Where someone else may light her gentle eyes,
And shower them with love as our love dies.
