A short poem about caring for my Grandmother in her final time..
Sitting waiting for the end to come
Using everything I can to numb
Trying to be strong and not let my pain show
Because to do so would make it harder for her to go
Watching the deterioration of both body and mind
Remembering when she was so strong, loving and kind
The grueling frustration because there’s nothing you can do
To make this fate bearable or less scary to go through
If only someone else of whom she gave her all
Would show some support, compassion or at least call
Hearing her say she feels so unloved, like they threw her away
She thanks me so humbly because I do stay
This is probably the hardest thing I’ve been through
But I adore this lady and there is nothing I won’t do
Even with her memory so limited and frail
She is very adamant about one favorite tale
She tells how I promised her when I was just a tot
And this promise she has never forgot
I promised to be there when she became old
To love and take care of her and her hand I would hold
Because she was always there for my needs
Now to watch her suffer just makes my heart bleed
