Free verse poem about the longing that comes with a long-distance love.
Once In A Lifetime

My heart has known no rhythm like the
Resounding melody that comes with the thought of you.

My tongue has never tasted nectar
So sweet as the words that fall from your lips.

‘Tis not petty, nor juvenile, this ache that grows
With each moment we are apart.

My ears cannot bear the silence that rolls
Like thunder through the darkness as I wait.

Patience, a virtue, is little comfort to the
Longing that accompanies this distant love.

Have we not slain the dragons guarding
The fortresses ‘round our hearts?

Have we not cried out in the night
For the comfort of a touch?

Was it not divine that I should know thy company,
Just as the sulking darkness began to creep around my soul?

Indeed! ‘Tis the work of angels to align the stars in such
A way as to lead us to one another.

Demons, straight from the depths of the underworld
Shall know no power over this fire.

Rivers of water rushing from the tips of
Polar peaks shall not quench this thirst.

Without fear or reservation, one moment, one touch, one kiss,
Shall alter the course of these lives forever.

The Earth shall shudder with such magnitude that
Mountains will crumble as these hearts collide.
