The beat of time is played by a steady drum
Running. I’m running. The laughter echoes around me. Still, I run, because if I stop, I will lose everything. So, I run.

I can hear him chase me from behind. His footsteps pound to a faithful beat. Still he gains. Still, I run. There is nothing more I can do. To turn around would mean my end.

The fear pools in my gut. My heart flutters in my chest. Running. Running. Running. When can I stop? When will those faithful footsteps no longer pursue me?

I grab at the people who enter and exit my view. They turn to dust in my hands. The beat takes hold once again. I stop reaching out in fear that they too will crumble before my eyes.

It’s getting darker, much darker as I run. My feet hurt and tears sting my eyes. I keep going, pushed by the faithful beat and the jeering laughter which haunts my head.

And as I run, I lose something inside. A hole in my chest. A feeling I cannot shake. A fear that persists in every nightmare and in every thought.

Running. Running. Running. Running. Until the unforgiving darkness swallows me whole.
