My fear of what may come to pass lest we forget the sacrifices of those who came before us
The poppies grow untended

The larks still haunt the skies

The dead a distant memory

The wind their only cry

Fallen are the crosses

Fallow lie the fields

For the young have forgotten

The most cherished of ideals

"Forget us not!"

Was all they asked

For that final sacrifice

Now time has passed and they've become

A number without face

An army without voices

A picture lost by time

A broken pact to mark the place

Few will ever climb

They died but once upon the field

And now they die again

Because we don't remember

What they did back then

An ugly picture painted

Of sacrifice forgotten

Of those who don't appreciate

Where liberty was begotten

We all need remember

The cost to buy our freedoms

Was paid not in gold and silver

But in the lives of men and women

A fate I hope never comes to pass, but unfortunately it's one I'm seeing more and more likely as the years pass and the young don't remember or understand the sacrifices made to ensure we have the freedoms we entertain today.
