Bethany stared at the shoreline, tears streaming down her face, as memories of her failed marriage assaulted her thoughts.
"I'm just not happy."
As she thought of Jason's first blow, she edged closer to the water.
"I've found someone else."
The second blow caught her off guard, but she thought she could overcome it. She could treat him better, show him more love, make him want her again. The water was around her ankles now.
"I want a divorce."
The third blow almost did her in, but she recovered. Divorces took forever, didn't they? She had time to convince him otherwise. She was waist deep in the water.
"I don't love you anymore."
The final blow devastated her. There was nothing she could do. The tears were washed away as her head went beneath the water.
