Easter might not happen this year.
Easter Held Hostage

Darkness was all he to see
Slowly thinking where could I be?
Shaking, flopping, as his mind awakened,
Nothing at all came to him. But then…

Listening was his forte, his big thing,
His best attribute, he was thinking.
But no noise no sound was heard
Maybe a squeak would return some word.

Alone for a while in the quiet in the dark
Ears twitching, brain beginning to spark
Waiting for something, some kind of clue
Aha his fur was a buzzin like bees in dew.

He realized he was nothing but a furry hare
With a job so daunting few others would dare
He must visit all kids in the world who believe
So they wake tomorrow with love for what they see.

The candy and chocolate and malted milk eggs
For the tots and tykes, even parents who beg.
Knowing he left some sweets and more
As families exchange hugs and kisses galore.

To get free from this dilemma was the task at hand.
For his big day was tomorrow to travel the land.
Again he focused his considerable hair-brain
And ventured forth a paw no matter the pain.

He stepped ahead, then to the side, and nothing.
No smell or sound, not as much as a feeling,
The air was empty, nothing to touch.
The whisker twitch fading, his sorrow was much.

Then slowly it came, a tee hee hee, a slight snicker
Now full blown laughter echoed the dark still air
Louder now he knew what he heard he was sure
Belly laughs and big old guffaws prickled his fur.

“What madness is this?” he heard himself cry
Bunny furry fluttering as he let out a heavy sigh.
He waited a minute, and heard a loud “wuff”.
His buckteeth clicked, chattered, he muttered “enough”.

In dim light emerging, silhouetted against sky
Bunny trying to answer questions: Who? Why?
Features almost familiar, now, the knowing lost in fog
A voice most petulant taunting, the rabbit was agog!

“You’re dead to the world. This year there will be No Easter, Bunny!
The best children’s characters all have holidays, don’t laugh, it’s not funny!
Tomorrow is my day! Kids the world over will love the plans I have for Easter.
No Bunny no more, is my plan. And now I prepare for the Bigger Feaster!

“Aw c’mon, Tooth Fairy, slow down a minute, let’s think it through.
If kids don’t get their chocolate that’ll be the end of you.
All through your life, you’ve been nothing but nice, well up till this point.
Your not a bad guy, do the right thing, and get me out of this joint.

“Well, Bunny. I guess, I guess, I don’t know what to say.
You got a point little buddy but I still want my day.
I put you in a hole and kinda scared your little furry self
I’m famous, but I’m not just some make-believe elf.”

“Well, Tooth, my big buddy, how about let’s team up.
We’ll leave your photo and card with all the chocolate fluff.
‘Happy Easter’ Brought to you Bunny & Tooth Fairy.
Maybe your day and your fame will live in kids’ memory.

“Well I must say, that sounds like a plan.
Let me grab your ears and give you a hand.
Sorry ‘bout the thing with the hole and all.
You’re a short little critter, but in some ways quite tall.”
