Life is...
Life is life, she said to me,
as I contemplated the meaning
of the scene before me.

It was as if the world
had blown up in my face,
a daring exposition of
everything I should have known,
would have known if only,
and I knew then and there
that I had been the one
to drop the ball. But…

Life just happens, I retorted,
as if my indifference to time
and the constraints of place
could solve this mess.
There is no such thing as
coincidence,
and my languid response
offset her stride.

A box of chocolates,
a spinning wheel.
Ever changing,
yet always the same.

Life just…
