A hypothetical letter to the mother of one of my best childhood friends.
Dear Jen,

How long has it been since I last heard the voice,
Of the mature chatter of the middle aged friends upstairs?
Us having fun, making poor choice after poor choice,
Them discussing the best choices for our lives and theirs,

That was a carefree time of freedom and pleasure,
Disregarding pain and suffering that seemed to be a myth,
We were too caught up in having fun to measure,
The love and care you all oversaw our lives with,

When tragedy strikes it never seems real at first,
Laughter and good times seem so long ago and far away,
Being unable to help hurts like an unquenchable thirst,
All the while you were fighting back with everything day after day,

The battle signs of war evident when next we met,
The carefree kids had each begun a journey different from the rest,
As for you the illness had already beset,
You were lost from home merely seeking a nest,

There was no safe haven for you to escape to,
But everyone around you held out a helping hand,
We all thought a rescue plan was beginning to take shape too,
But sometimes it seems that things never work out in the end,

It was a long arduous journey although it resulted in dismay,
But the fight you put up was enough to make everyone proud,
Using pride to shield the grief that day,
So as not to stand out in the crowd,

To dwell on the past and those that remain there forever,
Can stir up many mixed emotions that all contain a part of me,
To remember your kindness, maturity, and humor that was so clever,
It may hurt at first but the good times shine through cant you see?

I will never forget you and your will to never back down,
Winning and losing is arbitrary when you fight giving your life,
The resolve to die doing what is right deserves respect and renown,
Against a foe that plaques the people slicing through bonds like a despicable knife,

In case you cannot tell,
Since the day you fell,
We all have gone through hell,
Hoping you are well,
Love
