A true story, written in free form poetic style. It concerns the recent U.S. winter.
I Heard it Screeching

The wrong place
Stuck there again
"Why me Lord?"

Zero degrees
Midwest deep freeze
Ten PM

I'm outside
It's dark
Things to do

A truck yard
Across the fence
Dozens of trailers

I hear a sound
Horrible screeching
Something's in agony!

A goose perhaps?
Locked in a truck
No one to call.

I call out
"Hello.....
Is someone there?"

Horrible Screeching
It's 0 outside
What can I do?

Ten thirty
I go check again
"Hello, are you there?"

Weak screeching
Something is dying
Alone in the cold.

The gates are locked
All I can do is listen
To it dying

The phone book
I call
Answering machine

I go out again
No sound
"Hello?"

No sound
Something died
I heard it dying.
