A short poem with an unexpected ending
THE FUNERAL

My eyes filled with tears as the coffin came in,
But I had to stay strong though crushed within,
The congregation stood in silent respect,
A time to remember, a time to reflect.

This was the moment to say our final goodbye,
My friend was too young, much too young to die,
Though all were in sadness, line upon line,
No one’s pain was greater than mine.

But I had to pretend it wasn’t so bad,
I had to keep secret the feelings I had,
For no one would understand how heartbroken I felt,
They had no idea of the blow I’d been dealt.

For if they knew I’d be covered in shame,
You see, my love for my friend dare not speak its name,
But love is love and feelings run deep,
And special memories of my friend are mine to keep.
