The truth about suburbs where, yes, some are given everything. But others...
“On Suburbia”

Upper class neighborhoods
Lining a boardwalk
On a sea of concrete.
Wet cement, dry humor
From all those passers-by.
Chalk outlines on playgrounds
Predicting city futures
And big dreams
And death over
Petty things like
Money or love,
Or lack thereof.
Bright-eyed children
Filled with dark
Hearts bursting from
Narrow minds—
Light hearts
Of future dark,
Unburdened by passion
Until lust takes hold
And the drugs
On urban streets
Meet the kids halfway
To dreams
They’d never dared to dream.
Parents who care
Or don’t care to care
Spare too much
And despair not enough.
Children on my street,
Now grown up
With no clear thoughts
And no way to
Clear the thoughts
They have gained
From their
fragile minds
And
Hardened hearts.
We were raised
To believe in a world
That only believes
In us for what
We are not.
We are,
But we shall not be
Whole again.
