Required: Premise/Idea ▼

Identify the following:

        (1) Protagonist(s). Who is(are) your main character(s)?

        (2) Goal(s). What do they want?

        (3) Conflict. What is keeping them from their goal?

        (4) Antagonist(s). Who(what) is creating the conflict?

*** STILL NEED A STORY IDEA? Try the writing tools at the bottom of the calendar.

Sarah is my first main character. Her family goes from loving to terrifyingly abusive after her mother kills herself. Then she marries, is left pregnant, rapes, and finds the coven.

Matilda is the next main Character. She is Sarah's daughter that was born in the coven. She marries Damion and gives birth to her twins. Then moves her family out of the coven to worship in Christianity. Mary and Mercy are duel main characters. One Christian the other Witch.

Sarah dysfunctional family and childhood pregnancy. Matilda raising twins while hiding her powers. Mercy takes over the coven and kills Willow. Mary doesn't save Mercy to God.

Sarah has to survive mother's death, dad's addictions, brother's abuse, rape, and separation from the only man whoever loved her. Matilda gives birth twins in the coven, and has to turn to Christianity. Mary and Mercy find out that they are blood witches. They find their powers. Mary is afraid and turns deeper into the church, but Mary begins her search for more power.

Happens within the 20 years of the newspaper date of today. I want it to happen in a valley surrounded by wooded mountains.

Bonus: Theme ▼

Identify the theme or moral of the story. Brainstorm ways you could resolve your conflict within the confines of the theme.

I believe that the theme of my book is broken into a few subtitles. First it shows how a family can go from a happy one to a horrifying dysfunctional hell with a few unforeseen events. Second how a bad family life can lead a young person into different paths. Last, the story shows how religion can separate families as well as unite them.

Required: Protagonist Profile ▼

Complete a character profile    of your protagonist. The point of this exercise is for you to get to know your character inside and out before you write your novel. If you don't know your character, how can you expect it of your readers? Flesh out your pre-story character in detail. Keep in mind that your protagonist will grow in some way during your story. Add the profile to your character database (if applicable.)

Bonus: Protagonist Voice ▼

Have your protagonist introduce themselves to us in first person using their own voice. Brainstorm ways to make their voice unique. Add the introduction to your character database (if applicable.)

Sarah

Hello, my name is Sarah Siskins. I began my life in a very happy family. My brothers and I loved to play. We climbed hills and trees. We stomped in shallow ditches. I thought that we were all happy until I found my mother hanged on our clothes line.

This changed my life. I left home pregnant and alone. Now I am a sister at Mistresses of the Zodiac. I am a mother of a beautiful powerful daughter Matilda. I am also grandmother of two even more powerful grand-daughters. All born here in the coven.

Matilda

Being born in a coven, I had many mothers. I loved each and every woman in the community as if they had given birth to me. My real mother is Sarah, but in Willow and Anna, I found more nourishment. I never ever imagined moving my young daughters to a Christian church. Leaving the only family I ever knew behind for a God I was never taught about.

I still love my cult family. God tells us that we are all his children, but I have to raise my daughters in the real truth of God’s plan for them.

Mary

My name is Mary, and I will be your new Sunday school teacher from now on. I want each of you to know that God has a greater power than any that you can find here on Earth.

As teenagers, you will be tempted with many seductive things.  Your family may have different belief’s than you. Your friends may turn against you because you no longer party with them. And you many even doubt yourself. You must remember that even Christ was tempted of the Devil, but he taught us not to give into temptations.

Mercy

Sisters, Willow has left the coven. She has decided to turn over the government of this community to me. She trusts that you will follow my instructions. Mary is excommunicated. She is no longer to have contact with anyone in the coven. Anyone caught contacting her or carrying messages to Sarah to her will be stoned. Mary is brainwashed by so called Christianity, and she is planning to kill her own mother and sister. She will take this community down with us. She will be the end of Mistresses of Zodiac.

Required: Contest Round 1: Protagonist Background Story ▼

Write a story about your protagonist that takes place outside of your novel. Make your readers relate to him or her in such a way that we would be devastated if he or she were to experience conflict (which, ultimately, sometime in November, he/she will.) The object of the contest is to make your judges root for your protagonist! Simply put: the character we like best wins. If your protagonist is an assassin or someone similarly "unlikeable," never fear! I love Vlad Taltos, the professional assassin  . You can make us love your character, too. Add the background story to your character database (if applicable.)

*Submit your BITEM or ENTRY link by 1200 noon WDC time on Sunday, Oct. 05 to compete. If you miss this deadline or choose not to compete, you may still post your assignment completion for the grand prize, per the standard Prep guidelines.

Sarah opens her eyes in response to the sound of pounding on the door. Who could be knocking? No one knew where she had J.J. had spent their wedding night. Then she heard a loud masculine voice, “Junior!”

The voice woke her new groom. His face was white with fear. The face that she could only surmise was because the man behind the door was his father, the Pastor.

The two hurried to find their clothes. “Just a minute, Dad.” J.J. replied. He whispers to his bride, “don’t worry. You are my wife and there isn’t anything he can do to change that.”

J.J. opens the door expecting to see only his angry father with his stable mother to smooth the fire that undoubtedly burned in James eyes for his son’s betrayal. However, there stood James, but he wasn’t alone. Beside him stood Sarah’s father Edward, powered the many drinks that he consumed throughout the night. Sarah’s brother’s Lee and Jake had tagged along. Both her brothers were over six and a half feet tall. They stood over her five foot six inch husband, like mountains.

Lee slaps Sarah knocking her to the floor. J.J. ran over to her side. With one quick kick from the strong farmer’s leg, Lee had thrown the groom against his wife. The couple lay motionless against each other until Edward grabs Sarah by the hair and pulls her to the other side of the room. He held her back to watch her brothers beat the one she loved. She screams, “James, that’s your son.” She looks at James. “They are killing him. STOP!”

James yells to the brothers, “Stop, this is my son. I will take him far away.”

“Daddy, Daddy!” Sarah begs her father. “Please let him go. Make them stop, and I will never see him again.”

Lee and Jake throw him out the door. James follows after him. He helps his son back in the truck. Sarah tail lights dim as they drove off through swollen eyes. She knew that she would never see him again.

She never saw J.J. again, but she refused to go home. When she left the room, she was dropped at the hospital. She didn’t tell anyone what had really happen, but she signed herself out to journey into the unknown.

Spend at least fifteen minutes writing whatever ideas come to you about your plot, characters and setting.

Due to computer shutting down I have two different beginnings of the same thought.

Mary and Mercy are adorable toddlers. Mercy had wavy blond hair, crystal blue eyes, and dimples when she smiled. She captivated anyone she looked at. Mary had brown eyes and red hair. She was the least active of the sisters. Mary allowed her younger twin, by three minutes, to decide the activities of the day. Mary had bright red curls and piercing green eyes. Not a freckle on those cheeks. Mary had flawless skin to have red hair. She didn’t have freckles that usually marked most people with hair the color of hers. She was quieter than Mercy, and she required less attention. She was happy being in the background. Mercy was her Mary’s best friend, sister, and leader. Her green eyes shown with admiration for her sister.

Mercy loved her sister Mary, but she was happy to be a playmate that was so dedicated to make her happy. Mary loved Mercy too, and it was fun to play with Mercy. They were happy to be sisters, and life was always an adventure playing in the community park and the toys in their bedroom.

One night Matilda laid her daughters into pink full sized comfortable bed. “Momma, read.” Mary asked handing Matilda their Big Book Of Bible stories.

Matilda asked, “What story do you want me to read, my Darlings?”

“This one.” The girls pointed to a page with a picture of two women standing before the king with a guard holding a necked baby upside down with one leg. “I wont you to read this one.”

So Matilda began:

Along time ago, in a time before our Lord Jesus was even born. Two women lived together. Each woman was young and they were roommates. They were close, and they seemed to be close friends.

One day one woman gives the second some good news. “I am going to have a baby.” Her friend was excited for her, and the two of them begin to ready their home for the new member to the house hold.

They swept the floors. They washed the walls. They even made little gowns for the baby. Yea the baby was going to be very happy when he/she comes into the world.

The women got even more excited when the second woman came to the first about three weeks later. “Friend,” She said smiling, “We are truly sisters. For I too am going to have a baby.”

Everything was going to be awesome. They would be a family. Two women could be help to each for the next few months, and then help each other. Neither had family or husbands so each woman was excited to have each other.

During the next few months the women readied for the arrival of their little bundles. They made even more baby clothes, preserved more food, and made plans how the two of them would be able to help each other get breaks and rest while the babies were young. They seemed to have the situation all figured out.

However, things were about to change. The first woman gave birth to her child. The child was healthy, and weighed about seven pounds. The second woman delivered the child. She holds him. As she did, she felt her own child leap inside her own belly. Both women nursed and cared for this little boy for three days, and this is where things began to change. The second woman gave birth to a son. He weighed about seven pounds. There could not have been two happier women because they had someone to share their lives with. They were astatic to be mothers.

Required: Antagonist Profile ▼

Complete a character profile    of your antagonist (your "bad guy" - the character creating conflict for your protagonist.) If your antagonist is a situation rather than a person, write about what it is and how it will create the narrative conflict. Add the profile to your character database (if applicable.)

Further clarification:

- Wikipedia's definition of Narrative Conflict

In literature, the literary element conflict is an inherent incompatibility between the objectives of two or more characters or forces. Conflict creates tension and interest in a story by adding doubt as to the outcome. A narrative is not limited to a single conflict. While conflicts may not always resolve in narrative, the resolution of a conflict creates closure, which may or may not occur at a story's end.

A LOT of confusing things

by (41)

So the protagonist is the main character of the story and the antagonist is the person/ thing working against them (At least from the English teacher's point of view)...

Is the antagonist that is in charge (or the main cause) or the effects against the protagonist, the thing that takes the most action against the protagonist or possibly just the person that sets up the idea???

Sorry if this is a waste of time. I've just heard a lot of different deffinitions about protagonist and antagonist lately and they're all blending together...

Mercy

Mercy

Shortly after Mary leaves, she hears a prayer from her mother’s bedroom that hints that Mary is a witch.

She sets the house on fire from practicing ceremonies that she found in a book from the local library.

She cannot talk Mary into staying.

Mercy begins to plan to over through Willow.

Mercy is a younger twin of Mary. The two were grandchildren of Sarah who became a witch when she was fifteen, and Sarah gave birth to the first girl born at the coven, Matilda. Bonus: Antagonist Voice ▼

Have your antagonist introduce themselves to us in first person using their own voice. Brainstorm ways to make their voice unique. If your antagonist is a situation rather than a person, attempt to personify it and give it an explanation for interfering with your protagonist. Add the introduction to your character database (if applicable.)

Sisters, Willow has left the coven. She has decided to turn over the government of this community to me, Mercy Siskins. She trusts that you will follow my instructions. Mary is excommunicated. She is no longer to have contact with anyone in the coven. Anyone caught contacting her or carrying messages to Sarah to her will be stoned. For Mary is out to destroy our grandmother for her place here with the sisters. Mary is brainwashed by so called Christianity, and she is planning to kill her own mother and sister. She will take this community down with us. She will be the end of Mistresses of Zodiac.
