                    Nikkies trip to the store

Nikky was playing in her room when she heard her mother call, nikky I need you.

Yes mother Nikki said answering what do you want of me today she asked smiling?

I need you to go to the store today and get what's here on this list she answered Nikki.

Nikki took the list from her mothers hand and asked, can sassy come to the store too?

Yes she can, just be careful when you are crossing the streets with her Nikki.

Nikki promised her mother she would be careful and going out side spoke to sassy.

Mother says you can go to the store with me girl but we muse be careful crossing streets.

Nikki and her dog sassy left the yard for the store that was several blocks from her home.

As they reached the corner of each street sassy would sit next to her when she stopped.

Once she was sure it was safe to cross they would cross and go on to the next street.

After walking several blocks they finally reached the store where Nikki had to go.

Stay here sassy and wait for me she said and sassy sat down waiting for nikkies return.

In the store Nikki walked up to the counter and got the owner Mr. Whitley's attention.

Why hello young lady, got some shopping to do today I see, how may we help you today?

Hello Mr. Whitley, mother gave me this list to fill today, would you please help me fill it?

Mr. Whitley was more then glad to help her fill her shopping list from her mother.

In a short time the list of her needs was filled out and placed together in a bag for Nikki.

Are you sure you can carry this bag, all the way home young lady Mr. Whitley asked?

I am 8 years old sir and strong so yes I can carry it home to my mother today.

Nikki paid for the food and with the bag in her arms carried it outside to sassy outside.

They had 4 blocks to get back home and with sassy by her side they started back home.

The first block Nikki and sassy walked home together without any problems at all.

As they headed into the 2nd block sassy started to get playful and started barking.

I cannot play with you now sassy his young mistress said; wait until we are home again.

Sassy barked all the more and started to jump up and down near her mistress Nikki.

The more Nikki told her to stop the more she barked and jumped around her mistress.

When they were almost to the next corner sassy jumped in front young of her mistress.

Nikki tried to stop but ended up tripping over sassy and fell with her bag to the ground.

She tried to catch herself and the bag of groceries and almost did but not completely.

A jar of jam flew out of the falling bag and landed on the grass near the sidewalk.

Nikki was shook up a bit but not hurt otherwise but not so the jar of jam.

It had landed on the grass but it had also landed on a rock in the grass as well.

When Nikki saw the broken glass near the jar she was very upset at sassy and herself.

Oh no the jar of jam is broken what shall I do now, that was mothers favorite type of jam?

Sassy was quiet now for she knew she had caused her master hurt and she wined for it.

Hush sassy let me think, Nikki said to herself what should I do now, make up a story.

Should I tell the truth or blame you sassy, oh what should I do now, what should I do?

Her mother had always told her it is better to always tell the truth even if it hurts.

As she sat there thinking she remembered the Sunday school class teaching the week before.

They had been studying Moses and the Ten Commandments that Sunday once more.

It had been on false witness against another, Nikki wondered if that included pets too?

If I blamed you sassy I would be telling a lie and that is a sin too so I must tell the truth.

Picking herself up from the ground and fixing the bag as best she could she headed home.

Once home sassy went into her doghouse as Nikki entered into her home a little scared.

Nikkies mother was in the kitchen as she came in and she greeted her daughter home.

Hello Nikki, did you get everything I asked you to get at the store today?

Nikki put the bag on their dining table before she answered her mother.

Yes I did mother, I got everything on the list and headed back home with the full bag.

I had everything you wanted but we or I had a problem and well ah I fell and lost the jam.

You fell honey, her mother asked concerned, are you ok how did you fall, bag too heavy?

No mother the bag was not too heavy I just well I fell over sassy that wanted to play.

Oh you did her mother said; well then we will have to correct her for tripping you.

Nikki hung her hear as she answered, no mother it was not he fault, it was my fault.

Nikkies mother looking down at her daughter smiling and said, I am proud of you Nikki.

You could have easily blamed sassy and I would have known no better but you did not.

Yes mother Nikki answered but then I remembered our Sunday lesion.

The lesion was on testifying falsely and it would be a sin if I had blamed sassy falsely.

I am glad you remember your Sunday teachings honey, and she hugged Nikki.

We can get by without the jam but the truth is so much more valuable for us all!!

(Deuteronomy 5:20, do not testify falsely against your neighbor.) New living translation
