Twenty Paper Lanterns

I watch idly by
As twenty paper lanterns fly
Deep in the night sky

Red and small they flow
Like constellations they glow
Giving me a private show

Then like a firecracker’s spark
Or a tired meadowlark
They slowly fade into the dark

And what can I do?
Stand idly by and make you
A memory new
