These medications belong to a homogenous group of medicines called central nervous system depressants. Typically used because of their anxiolytic properties, and when given in large does, produce tranquilizing effects. When taken in high doses and over an extended period of time, opiates, aka pain medications, can cause mental or physical dependence

Opiate meds and doses

Oxycodone can be prescribed in doses of 10–30 mg every 4 hours . The controlled release form AKA as oxycontin is typically prescribed in doses of 10–160 mg every 12 hours. Other immediate release forms of Oxycodone are AKA as Percocet and Percodan.

Opiate Detox Meds: What are they?

Methadone: Methadone is administered orally on a daily basis with strict program conditions and guidelines. Methadone does not impair cognitive functions. Patients are able to feel pain and experience emotional reactions. Methadone is known for its ability to relieve the cravings associated with opiate addiction

Dosing is usually 5 to 10mg. It is taken by mouth once a day. Because methadone is effective in eliminating narcotic withdrawal, it is used in detoxifying opiate addicts. It is, however, only effective in cases of addiction to heroin, morphine, and other opioid drugs, and it is not an effective treatment for other drugs of abuse.

Subutex and Suboxone: is the first opioid medication approved for the treatment of opioid dependence in an office-based setting. The active ingredient in Subutex is buprenorphine. It is used to decrease opiate cravings and reduce symptoms of opiate withdrawal. Suboxone can be used during detox and as a maintenance drug. It consists of buprenorphine and naloxone. Naloxone is an ingredient added to reduce the chances of the medication being abused. Buprenorphine also comes in IM form called Buprinex.

Narcan: It is an injection used to treat overdoses of morphine, codeine, and heroin. Naloxone can put a person into automatic withdrawal. It is used in the treatment of respiratory depression caused by overdose.

Robaxin and Skelaxin: these are muscle relaxers and used as adjunctive treatments for opiate/alcohol, and benzo withdrawal.

Bentyl: also used as an adjunctive treatment for opiate and alcohol detox. It is Rx for abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, and constipation, as it functions to reduce gastric secretions.

Phenergan/Zofran/Tigan: These are all anti-emetic medications that function to reduce nausea and emesis. Rx. as adjucntive treatments for detox from alcohol, benzos, and opiates.
