what I need today
No need for parsimony now
I will not count the cost
I’ll read the echoes of my heart
with no compunction, stand apart
and spend some time to mend my art
before my song is lost.

I want a place to be alone
no limits, no drawn lines—
and so I’ll shape a mountain height,
in gleaming spires winter white
where I can slip away from sight
my castle in the pines.

and in the lighthouse turret top,
I’m typing fast and soft
my studio among the trees
sealed tight against a winter freeze
the only guest a verdant breeze
bearing spring aloft.

and when I look up from my work
that catches me in thrall
my mind spins words and worlds away
with no one near to make me stay
no fingers stopping ears with clay
to mask the siren’s call.

and when I’m ready, I’ll descend
into the whirl and blur—
yes, yes, I need a crystal tower
with shelves of books and thorny flowers
lace and paint and clay—and hours
when everything is words
