A poem I wrote for my children
To my boys

I once was a soldier,
A heart with no fear,
The world at my feet,
Shared values, held dear.

No stranger to death,
A colleague, considered,
The work of a postman,
The evil, delivered.

My word spoken softly,
Heard for miles around,
Souls under a horse hair,
Now my voice, not a sound.

I scream to be heard,
Deaf ears does it fall,
A firing squad,
My back and a wall.

The fight taken from me,
I kneel to pray,
Dear lord.....what happened?
Truly, the longest day.

To my boys I am sorry,
Your father has failed,
I love you so dearly,
But my soul, derailed.

Remember,
I once was a soldier,
Of that please be proud,
My gaze from afar,
If our lord will allow.
