Short poem about a young woman on a subway with a bright future innocent of future pain.
Through the subway steam, through the cold, through the bodies I see her
So like my wife, so like my daughters
Hope fresh on her face like the the light in my love's face
Upon first realization she graces the world
So like the future I see for my girls
A countenance and bearing that I wish for my son's future bride
Oblivious to the pain of the world but fully in it
Carriage of confidence
Well educated, moneyed
Her parents know only her name
Temptation to imagine future faces irresistible
She will face the darkness
She must move through the world
I envy her the moments of joy
They will live in between the now
and the dark
