a play off of "riddles in the dark"--a chapter in The Hobbit
If I played the riddle game, deep down in Gollum’s cave,
(which I really wouldn’t do, I’m not a hobbit, brave)
but if I played the riddle game and I was ever stuck,
and asked about my pocket-ses, my foe’d be out of luck.

The things I keep and treasure close are not buttons and string,
or hands or shells or handkerchiefs or Bilbo’s magic ring.

The value of my pocket contents can’t be overstated,
and that’s because my pocket things are very health related—

for instance, see the long clear tube that disappears inside?
All day and night it works for me, to keep me well supplied
with the right amount of minute clicks that push through insulin
from black-ish pump through tube to needle, resting in my skin.

I also carry, wrapped and horded for emergencies—
my sugar stash, ‘cause when I am low, it works with urgency,
low blood glucose leads to death, so I keep sugar pills—
medicinal hard candies that I’ll eat, even when ill,
because lows are the kind of things that make my brain run slow,
and there are things I will not eat when I am very low.

So if I asked, what’s in my pockets, they would never guess,
and then I’d follow Gollum, close, to find the cave’s egress.
