A poetic rendition of Gabriel's failed slave rebellion

Gabriel's Rebellion

Stature demanding "follow me"

Commanding presence, ready to lead to freedom.

A promise of liberty;

God, let us fight;

God, free us from this bondage.

1000 of us armed;

Armed with the sharpened shovels

and new fired swords crafted by our commander's skilled hands.

Destroy those who kill liberty,

But spare our friends and those innocent of this sin.

Lord, we only ask for our freedom;

Lord, we have suffered for so long.

The rain pours and thunder cracks,

Lightning flashing across an angry sky.

The ground quickly fills with water,

Soon it will bar our way.

"Lord, we only ask for our freedom;

Lord, we have suffered so long."

The rain pounds down upon us and washes away the roads.

"Not now, not this way" it seems to say.

We cannot move forward,

We cannot go back.

Lord, we only want our freedom;

Lord, we have suffered so long.

Gabriel our fearless leader,

Who would have led us to liberty,

is captured.

He dies a martyr's death.

Lord, we only wanted our freedom;

Lord we have suffered for so long.
