Reworked to more sincerely reflect me
The Rest of Me

Sights and scents and sounds of Nature,
Dusty tang of stagnant earth,
A sky of crystal,
Colored jade,
The Bird that whistles Spring's rebirth

A Chipmunk's eager chitter,
A Mayfly's mindless droning,
A world replete with interaction
         I can't touch, but I can see

I'm seen by the odd-out critter,
Deprived the comfort of the lonely.
A newfound shame of my inaction
         Before the numbness reclaims me.

A vacuum pulls inside my chest,
A stand off with the majesty.
I reach out to the fantasy
When I see someone reaching out to me

Numbness gives way to pins and needles
Somehow our fingers meet

Wide-eyed, I beat a quick retreat,
Attempt to find the hole.
I'm rebuffed by what now seems a wall.
It would seem that I'm now whole.

I never asked for such a burden
To be placed in me.

In time my legs have learned to bear
The weight of having spirit there.
My heart and mind are slowly shifting
Poisoned thought to prayer:

Dear God, you've sent the rest of me!

Day by day I learn more about
How to be alive.
My hope is by the day I die,
I'll have finally arrived.
