Kentucky Pastoral
Five days till spring

It cold rained  daily for a week
Then the temperature rose
The first leaves strained
Opening now is too much.

Green buds so tiny small
Fly a green flag so tiny
Signaling coming attractions
With blossoms unopened

A blush of pink
A shower of white.
To my eyes
Pure delight

Birds were singing
Hopping from branch
Hoping to find a perfect
Nesting place, a home.

More leaves burst free
From buds full of possibility
Form a green robe covering
The stark nakedness of winter.

Blossoms, pear, apple and cherry
Fill the air with contrasting scents
Suddenly life pushes up
Revealing a bell shaped lily.

Hundred year old lilacs
Line the alley,  scenting the air
With exotic Fragrance their signal
That Spring has arrived!
