Changes

I needed to stop and think. Parking my car, I locked it and went for a walk to clear my head. Obviously I hadn’t planned this venture well. Thinking it wouldn’t work anyway, I never thought beyond that moment. Now here I was, driving randomly, no plan, no next step. Who knew that crazy idea would work.

It was so pleasant lying here in the soft grass. I wanted to stay here forever. The sun was shining down into this little cove making it seem like a nest. I began imagining myself as a little bird in a cozy nest. Looking up to the top of the hills, there were trees and houses. Smoke was coming from chimneys; it must be cold up there. No matter, it was wonderfully warm here in my little nest. I snuggled down more, picking up a stray leaf and twirling it in my fingers.

I was writing a book. I knew it was going to change my life if I could just get it published. Just playing with ideas, I’d thought up the heist of my company, in the abstract. When the idea seemed too easy, I got concerned that a real crook could do it. I brought the idea to my supervisor, Mr. Jenks, who assured me it was impossible. Except he was wrong. Someone could pull it off, and I had thought up exactly how.

I imagine Mr. Jenks was enjoying a nice warm place right now too. In Mexico maybe. I could hear the sirens getting closer now. I had no plausible explanation as to where the money in my car had come from, nor how I knew exactly how it had been taken. I closed my eyes. Thanks to my book, my life was finally about to change.
