Written for Write from the Heart Poetry
When I first saw you
Ugly, I called you that.
You were someone I
wanted nothing to do with.

I had walls built up
against my heart
from being hurt too much.
The others used me
for what I could give them

A simple gift is all it took
to break down my wall.
Friendship is what you
offered and friendship
was all I could give
in return.

In time I learned
to trust again.
You protected me
from those who
would hurt me again.
You refused to let me go.
Yet you did anyway.

We came together at last
not knowing where
love would take us.
Thank you for staying
with me through
everything I've done.
Together we've created a life
til death do us part. I do.
