The Stairway

I take two steps and fall, but grasp,
Knowing stairs will lead,
To a better life than I have known,
Or this I must believe.

I pull myself two more, but slip,
And feel I just can't go.
Another step like this will lead
To Death. I only know,

That six more steps are within reach,
So I grasp and pull up hard.
Finally, the top I see
A bright and shining star.
