Qatar's Gigantic Monoliths:
East-West/West-East1

They stand
on the Zekeet Peninsula
extending across a kilometer of desert sand,
with the tallest rising 16.7 meters above the desert.

These steel plated monoliths,
looking like aliens
descended from the stars,
are the work of artist Richard Serra

Located
in an obscure section
of the Qatar desert
near Camel Underpass No. 72,
they patiently wait,
in 122 Fahrenheit temperatures
for visiting tourist.

Will these artistic invaders
remain standing into the next millennium?

What will archeologist
of the future
theorize about them?
