Poem, written for the Christmas in July contest - prompt is the first snow at Christmas.
Stars twinkling,
illuminating the path
for the man in red
with his reindeer
flying at warp speed

I watch at the window,
staring into the dark,
and then it happens …
the Christmas miracle

Small, white crystals
falling as though
tipped from someone
high above,
seasoning the earth
with his soft, silent spice

Warm gloves and scarf
accompany my excitement
as I run outside and jump
into the falling flakes;
tongue sticking out,
I spin in circles,
trying to catch a
tiny, frozen gift

In no time, the world becomes
a freshly fallen wonderland,
and my heart skips to
the beat of snowflakes,
pitter-and-pattering on my head,
the air stills, all is quiet,
until the whooshing sound
as a snowball hurtles
past my ear …
this is war
