Memories of a time long ago.
Sunshine for Breakfast

He’d wake me
by putting his sunshine face
within a breath of mine
and saying,
”Mom, dinner please.”
He hadn’t yet mastered
the word “breakfast”.

Those round brown eyes
sparkled promise
and will remain fresh
in my mind beyond my end.

It was only a few short moments
before he matured
into the strong face of a man
fulfilling those promises.

But it’s the memory
of that tiny face
that makes my heart leap
out of my breast
and twist inside out.
It was from that face
I discovered
how steel-strong
love can be.
