Catching Memories

Old Memorial Stadium sticks in my head
watching visiting Yankee, Thurman Munson, catch the night away
then there was Shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr.
Number eight jersey

Take me in my mind to the Inner Harbor now
to what they call, "Camden Yards"
still home to some great ball
even Mr. Ripken played there for a time in the autumn of his career

Thurman Munson died young in a plane crash
in the late 1970's
greatest catcher I ever saw
but Rick Dempsey was pretty fine, too

playing for the Baltimore Orioles
may not bring the glory of the Yankees
but it brought some crisp fall nights to Charm City
which is what natives call "Baltimore"

Poe is buried downtown, mysteriously
in the city where he died
And right down the big road to Rockville,
you'll find F. Scott Fitzerald and his Zelda resting comfortably 'til the next Jazz Age

St. Mary's Church cemetery is where they lie
the church had Wednesday night Bingo
could spirits of flappers past hear the caller?
in the shadow of literary giants and baseball greats,

Maryland my Maryland
my ultimate home...
