Nativity Eve

Icy winds -
Wreaths of breath,
Nature moans this natal eve.
Kittens press against the cat – pooling heat.
The world sinking - in despair.
Frozen minds wait the fate of night,
As shepherds watch flocks for sacrifice.
Suddenly, dazzled eyes gaze where an angel stands.
Shepherds are en-wrapped in a mantle of light,
While they hear a not thought of announcement.
Their awe and fears were hushed into a calm delight,
When angelic hymns fell on mortal ears.

The hymns ceased.
Light faded from the sky.
The shepherds were alone.
But the angelic message remained.
A light led their path to a newborn Infant.
The earth's poor; haunted by fear.
The message came into our ceaseless need.
Christ – the Holy One is here!
