I'm not excited, full of hope (Form: Quatrains)
2023: The Not-So-New Year

The calendar has turned its page;
a new year’s released from its cage
dragging the carcass of the past
into a future, bright and vast.

I’m not excited, full of hope.
The “new” in New Year is a trope .
I feel time’s but a single breath
that starts at birth and ends at death.

No resolutions will I make.
Though made sincerely, most I’d break
as time moves on and compromise
would defeat each before it dies.

As I look back, it’s clear to me -
the road I’ve traveled’s plain to see.
There I went straight and there I turned;
a choice I made and one I spurned.

The tempests and the storms I braved;
with promises my road is paved.
Many were broken, others kept
amidst the times I laughed and wept.

Had I the foresight at the start
to warn “not for the faint of heart,”
I’d still have journeyed to the end
enjoying every twist and bend.

To only one promise I’m true –
to always embrace what is new.
Tomorrow it will all be gone
yet I will still be moving on …

until my final breath is drawn.
