With a soot-blackened hand I reach inward.
With a soot-blackened hand
I reach inward

I place my palm
on the poor battered thing
and feel it tremble at my touch

Yet it is soothed
by meeting my scorched flesh:

Acknowledged
Understood.

I withdraw,
Leaving black coal behind,
and return to my work.
