a poetry entry for NEWBIES ONLY (september 2k19)

marlboro cigarettes.

i'm always polite.
i hold doors open for people,
i say please and thank you.

i keep most thoughts to myself,
and don't cry in front of people,
and that's almost all the time.

i smoke marlboro cigarettes.

i get them from friends,
who have friends of friends,
whose brother is 18 and jobless.

i stand on street corners
and feel the sting in my lungs
just to block out the sting in my chest.

i smoke marlboro cigarettes.

and i hate that you stopped saying,
you love me because i say it,
all the time.

and the time i don't spend smoking,
is more time i spend,
thinking about you.

i smoke marlboro cigarettes.

you were so pissed,
when i told you.
the things i wasted my time on.

to keep my knees from bouncing,
to keep my breathing steady,
to keep my heart from pounding.

i smoke marlboro cigarettes.

the things you say,
you're angry.
so mad that you're mad.

"you'll ruin your lungs"
they're pretty boxes,
of flowers.

i smoke marlboro cigarettes

and it's so selfish,
of you,
your anger.

but you just love when i sing,
and speak pretty things,
for you.

and i guess you love me,
that's why you care,
when i smoke,
marlboro cigarettes.
