Will February’s heart be bleak this year?
If February had the will
to bring us further snow and chill,
his last two weeks might be much worse
and I think that would be adverse.

If February had his way
to lend cold white for ski and sleigh,
then bad would be his latter part
though he was bad right from the start.

The polar vortex would intrude
if February sat and stewed
about how he could freeze with rime
our walk of life in wintertime.

And would he not, with cold intent,
remain unwilling to relent
to longer days and warmer things
as springtime waited in the wings?

I think Sir February knows
when bitter cold of Arctic blows,
that most are quite averse to laugh--
beware then of his second half!

If February had carte blanche,
if he were one to stand and stanch
the readiness of spring to start,
then surely he’d be bleak of heart.
