I persisted
I never thought I was the smartest one in any room.
I always let the others have their say.
So I can feel much better in the way that things turned out
when I see that I’ve ended up this way.
I’ve had to work much harder than most anyone I know.
Sometimes it felt my feet were mired in clay.
But perseverance is a trait that I am famous for
and I persisted to this very day.
I worked my fingers to the bone and never took a rest.
And now I stand above the tawdry fray.
But now as I look back at all the things I have achieved
I find that I have worn my life away.
I never stopped to marvel at a rainbow in the sky.
I seldom thought to hang my head and pray.
I gave up all those moments of my life I won’t get back
just to have what I am left with here today.
