The poet's thoughts on his 79th birthday.
ON COMPLETING SEVENTY NINE: a sonnet

Now that seventy nine steps are complete
I ask myself how many more to go.
The path ahead with storms is so replete
I wonder how far my boat I can row.

But then a voice calls me from deep inside
My friend what’s there to worry or repent?
You have handled well the wave and the tide
Your time was not basking on the shore spent.

Take heart and row and swim if there be need
Don’t forget I am always by your side.
I will be there in any storm indeed
As long as your faith in me does abide.

Forget not one day you will have to go
But till that day you must keep up the show.
