Flash Fiction
The Noise

“I heard a noise,” Ted whispered.

They froze. Finally, Alex whispered, “Probably the wind or something. Keep going.”

“I don’t think it was wind,” Ted said, following his older brother.

“I said, or something. As long as it wasn’t somebody, or a monster, we’re fine.

“A monster?” Ted asked, in a tiny voice.

“I’m kidding, there aren’t any monsters.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve never seen one.”

“That’s why?”

“Have you?”

“What if everybody who ever saw a monster was eaten by it, there would still be monsters and nobody could ever say they saw one!”

“Number one: be quiet! Number two, oh yeah?” said Alex. “How do you always think up these things? But, right now, be quiet!”

“Too late,” came a deep voice from behind. Both boys jumped out of their skins!

“Where do you think you’re going?” the deep voice asked.

“DAD!” Alex finally yelled, “You scared us to death!”

“And I thought you were raccoons in the house...”

“Really?” Ted asked, impressed.

“No. I actually thought my two sons were sneaking into the kitchen with intentions of getting into something they shouldn’t be getting into.”

“We didn’t bring any of those,” Alex said.

“Those what?”

“Intentions.”

“Intentions means plans...” Ted whispered.

“Oh, then yes,” Alex said, “We were practicing.”

“Practicing? For what?”

“For when we get older and have jobs as Super Heros. You gotta start somewhere Dad. It’s not like we can roam the galaxy, or even the neighborhood, learning.”

“Good point,” Dad said, suddenly totally confused, “Well, carry on!”

As they walked away Ted turned to Alex and said, “For an idiot, you do think pretty quick on the spot.”

“Thanks!” Alex said, “For an egghead, you’re not so bad yourself!”

The brothers went far in life, not exactly Super Hero’s, but pretty close.
