I hope not to offend anyone, but I thought about how subjective independence is.
|I’d say our independence is a matter of degree.
No question there were papers signed to set our country free,
and pre-enactment feats involved, like dumping British tea.
But friends, how unencumbered are we each allowed to be?
So many parts make up our world, but all are not aligned.
For instance, not all childhoods are of a single kind.
When Nature battles Nurture with those parents less refined,
its mental repercussions leave their children in a bind.
Instead of moving forward as we run the human race,
we fight to free the daemons their dysfunction set in place.
and though there are no Royal British Acts we have to face,
these shackles shape our futures with a similar disgrace.
Of course I’m more than grateful to be living where I do
and won’t deny this day deserves a celebration too.
But switching from the nation’s to a person’s point of view,
some liberties are lacking due to straw lengths that we drew.
