Rhymer goes on trial for being…human?

“We all understand how irregular this is, right? I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a case where the prosecutor is represented by the defense. I’m not even sure I understand the terms. Mr. Reisen, please explain what’s goin’ on here.”

“Your honor, I’m Mister Rhymer Reisen, and I’m defending the prosecutor Rhymer Reisen as he makes a case against himself.”

           “So…wait…you’re all the same person?”

“Your honor, it’s a transcendental thing, something existential. I wouldn’t start pulling threads here.”

“Fine. So what is Rhymer alleging against…himself? Himself? Himselves?

“Your Majesty, I’m Rhymer, and I’m charging myself with being the worst human ever.”

           “On what grounds?”

“Basically, I don’t know. I mean, my whole point is that I don’t know anything anymore. For the last forty years, I thought the world was set in stone, that family would always be there, and that love would always prevail. But these days, I don’t have a lot of hope for humanity anymore, and I don’t know where that leaves me. Where is that supposed to leave me? I’m drowning in what I don’t know. I have an Iq of one-hundred and forty, but I have no idea what’s happening to me. Is there even a place for me here anymore? Or was there ever a place to begin with?”

“Mr. Reisen, what do you have to say regarding your client’s allegations?”

“Your Honor, we hear accusations with no legal basis. We move to dismiss on the account of, what? Finding oneself?”

“It’s deeper than that, Your Majesty. I’m infuriated by people who don’t care about each other. It drives me crazy to hear someone speak of how much love they have, only to turn around and act with hatred. And then I get frustrated with myself for being frustrated by others.”

“I still don’t think that qualifies you as the worst human. It sounds like you’re growing into your age. Breathe it out, and don’t let anyone mess with your inner peace. You worked too hard to find it to allow others to fondle it. And, while it sounds like you may be miserable, I don’t think you’re illegal.”

“But, Your Majesty, I wasn’t made for this time. I was made for a time when people watched out for each other.”

“Rhymer, more people are watching out for humanity than you think. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself to be something evolved, but you’re just like everyone else: human. You’re a mess, but it’s beautiful and delicate. Go, figure out the desirable parts of yourself, and let those shine. And don’t ever…ever…come back into my courtroom with some Matrix-style scenario. I don’t even have a precedent for this. Just, go and be better than you are. Are they still serving tequila down in the cafeteria? I need to go and contemplate how this just worked. Case dismissed!”
