The Glove

“Can you turn that down a little?” Gramp asked.

“Oh, sorry! What kind of music do you like?” asked Jeff.

“You don’t need to change the station, it was just a little loud.”

“Oh, OK. It’s just background noise.”

“You’re not really listening to it?”

“Well, I do listen a lot, but sometimes I just use it as background, when I’m thinking about something.”

“Background?”

“Yeah, it just keeps me from being distracted by other things.”

“Now that, I understand. But, I always go for a quiet place.”

“Yeah, that’d be good, but I don’t have many quiet places so I just go for something so people won’t try to talk to me.”

“I get it, good solution. Do you have something on your mind now?”

“Yes. My baseball glove is falling apart. I ordered a new one with my savings, but it won’t be here till next week and I need one for the game tomorrow. I don’t think the one I have will make it through another game.”

“Can you borrow one?”

“Yes, but all the players will be using theirs so it would be a glove that doesn’t get used much, and once I ask someone I’m obligated to use theirs’s or I’ll hurt their feelings. I’m trying to think of someone who plays a lot on their own.”

“How about me?”

“You play baseball?”

“Used to, and still have my glove.”

Jeff used Gramp’s glove the next day, and continued to use it through high school, then college too. He never used the new glove. Jeff even passed Gramp’s glove on to his own son, when Kenny got interested in baseball.

It still resides in the Randel household, a ratty old baseball glove, now a cherished heirloom on a shelf in the living room.
