Thanksgiving Storm

Shadows creep along the sidewalk,
like the ghosts of Thanksgivings past,
voices echo through half-empty streets
carried along by winter's cold blast.

Broken gates creak on their hinges,
vacancy signs blink off and on,
loose shutters slap in the wind,
and storm clouds hide the approaching dawn.

The electricity is yo-yoing,
the streetlights have all gone out,
the city has shut completely down,
not even the cops are roaming about.

This sudden storm has ruined Thanksgiving,
left us shivering in the night,
sleepless we wander through our homes,
trying to keep warm by candle light.
